The Macdonaldtown Gasworks Remediation is one of our most awarded projects, setting the benchmark for excellence in service delivery.

Located in Sydney’s inner west, the site was used between 1892 and 1958 to produce gas for lighting railway carriages and the Eveleigh Railway Workshops. Over decades, the processing of coal and shale contaminated both the soil and groundwater, leaving behind a complex remediation task.

Over a two-year period, our Environmental Services team excavated and removed 37,000 tonnes of contaminated soil, restored the heritage listed Southern Gasholder to its former glory, and improved the biodiversity of the site through revegetation with local native species.

The removal of contamination and its potential health risks from the urban environment benefitted our client RailCorp, the customers of Sydney Trains who travel through the area daily and most importantly the adjacent community.

The remediation team demonstrated dedication, intelligence and a ‘can do’ attitude that was inspirational to all project stakeholders. With the land now safe, the project has been recognised for excellence with six national and state award wins, positioning us as the leading provider of remediation solutions in Australia.
