LEADING FROM THE FRONT: GMS MOBILISATION AND CULTURE CHANGE

Simon Kirkpatrick is a great example of how our leaders deliver value, safety and innovation to our clients and their customers. As General Manager of one of our Transport projects in Queensland – Gateway Motorway Services – Simon leads a team with the responsibility for delivering a Traffic Incident Management Service (TIMS) to serve the 300,000 daily users of Brisbane’s toll roads.

His leadership in driving a safety-first culture has ensured that operations and maintenance activities are carried out in a safe and compliant way. This has included increasing the frequency and diversity of training, and helping team members become more situationally aware and knowledgeable about safety.

This culture change was recognised externally at the 2018 QLD Work Safe Awards.

In December 2018, Simon delivered an innovative project that has revolutionised the TIMS industry by introducing Australia’s first Motorcycle Traffic Response Unit. The project was delivered on time, under budget, with improved contractual KPIs, whilst also reducing the team’s carbon footprint – exceeding stakeholder expectations.

GMS Road Operations Manager Brett Simpson says Simon’s ability to set clear expectations of his team sets him apart from many other leaders.

“In mobilising a winning team, Simon thinks about how he can bring together the right combination of skills, talent, and personalities for each part of the business,” Brett says.

“He also ensures stakeholders are involved and consulted in any programs of change within our business, resulting in a more engaged workforce.”
