EXCEPTIONAL COMMITMENT TO DELIVERING REMEDIATION SOLUTION WORK

As Principal Environmental Scientist for Remediation, Matthew Clutterham likes the challenge of finding solutions – which he does incredibly well.

Matthew is a key member of Ventia’s Environmental Remediation team in Sydney and was involved in developing the innovative remediation solution to address legacy coal tar contamination from a former gasworks at Kendall Bay in Sydney’s inner west. What’s exciting is that it uses in-situ solidification underwater to stabilise the contaminated sediments in the Bay, reducing risk to human health and the environment.

Initial field-based trials were a critical step in the design of this innovative solution.

“Matt showed exceptional commitment during the design and field trial execution phases of this project,” says Senior Technical Adviser, Remediation, Dr John Hunt.

“His careful preparation in the design of the trials, his persistence and dedication in collecting validation information, supervising laboratory testing and collaborating to translate the results were all excellent.”

The trial phase was a scientific, engineering and environmental feat in itself. Matthew directed the team who conducted the stabilisation testing which wasn’t without its challenges.

As well as working in a shallow marine environment, the team had to effectively manage the safe operation of large plant and equipment from floating barges.

The team worked around the challenges of identifying and implementing the required mix design, remediation logistics, and design and scheduling to achieve the project performance criteria and facilitate productivity during full scale implementation.

It is one of the first times in-situ stabilisation has been used to remediate contaminated marine sediments on a large scale anywhere in the world.

Ventia continues to lead the way in remediation solutions through the excellence and commitment of our scientists like Matt.
