KEEPING OUR SENIORS SAFE ON A NEW WIRELESS SITE

When substantial rains isolated an elderly couple living on a semi-remote hilltop farm at Mount England in Queensland, Field Manager Brent Devin was quick to offer much-needed support.

A new telecommunications tower was to be built on a local farm, accessible only via a steep, narrow, one-kilometre track that had been partially degraded over time. Brent had been to the farm on several occasions and got to know the owners and their property.

When the rains came, the track was rendered impassable on two separate occasions within less than a week. The couple, isolated in their home, were worried about how they would be able to access food, medical supplies and medical attention if needed.

Hearing of the couple’s predicament, Brent placed himself on call to provide 24-hour assistance to the elderly residents throughout the periods of impact.

With his four-wheel drive vehicle, Brent was able to regularly check on the couple and personally delivered basic supplies including medicines, food, milk and newspapers.

Beyond this, Brent also helped to influence the client’s decision to upgrade the entire track to a higher standard than it had been previously, enabling safe access to the couple’s property for many years to come.

Area Construction Manager Ian Hutchinson praised Brent’s actions. “By ensuring the safety and wellbeing of two very vulnerable individuals, Brent demonstrated his strong sense of responsibility and community spirit,” he said.
