AUSTRALIAN FIRST MOTORCYCLE TRAFFIC RESPONSE UNIT

Breaking down on a motorway can be a frightening experience but support is now closer to hand thanks to an Australian-first initiative which Darren Nolan and Paul Hillman helped launch.

The Motorcycle Traffic Response Unit (MTRU) has successfully partnered with the Gateway Motorway Services team for the Open Road Network Service Agreement, getting to motorists sooner to help keep them safe and get them on their way.

The initiative involves the deployment of two motorcycles during peak and high congestion periods to provide assistance to motorists and keep traffic moving on the Logan and Gateway motorways in Brisbane.

Motorcycles are quicker to respond due to their ability to legally filter through slow or stationary traffic.

Riders in the MTRU can perform basic incident response services, including offering motorists refuelling, battery charging, tyre change, first aid, small compartmental firefighting and general advice.

Darren and Paul ride high performance motorcycles with state-of-the-art equipment, including a new airbag vest for riders and more puncture-resistant road tyres – both trialled for the first time in Australia as part of this initiative.

This program has attracted national and international attention and exceeded client expectations.
