The team responsible for remotely managing more than 48,000 telecommunications assets across Australia has delivered outstanding service performance despite working in a challenging, complex and unpredictable environment.

Since 2000, the Network Integrity and Facilities Management (NIFM) team based within the Network Operations Centre (known as the NOC) in Heatherton, Victoria has been responsible for managing Telstra’s telecommunications assets – everything from roadside cabinets, radio towers and remote solar sites to 40-floor city exchanges.

The team operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and, at any given hour, could be organising for urgent repairs at a remote site, assessing an air-conditioning system failure at an exchange building, as well as arranging for generators to be available at a rural location to restore power should severe weather hit.

Meeting service delivery and performance targets is challenging by any measure, especially when coupled with the geographical remoteness of some sites. The team also face 30-40 severe unplanned network incidents each year which are mostly due to adverse weather conditions. The team always rises to the challenge, often working extra hours to ensure services are restored ASAP as was the case when Cyclone Debbie hit in 2017.

The team continually works to enhance their monitoring systems, develop new procedures and refine their approach to meet service delivery targets. They embrace a ‘one team’ philosophy and conduct roadshows and briefings to update field teams and subcontracting partners on new requirements.

The approach to continuous improvement and keeping the broader team updated is paying off, with the team achieving 100% of their targets for four consecutive months in 2018.

The team has previously been recognised by Telstra for their outstanding service performance, which has set an industry benchmark and contributed to Visionstream’s reputation as one of the few contractors trusted and authorised by Telstra to keep their customers connected. This is quite an achievement. Well done team.
