The Ventia Boral Amey Joint Venture team were the quiet achievers during this year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, working to ensure minimal road network disruption for over 6,000 athletes and more than half a million spectators.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games provided an opportunity for our Transport team to work on one of the most robust and complex traffic management plans Ventia had ever participated in.

Working for close to two years with the Queensland State Government and Games authorities, the team prepared for all traffic scenarios. This detailed planning, paired with learnings from the Sydney Olympics, meant they provided expert advice and high calibre service to the client.

In the lead up to this major international event, staffing was increased by 200% with an additional 95 people undergoing a rigorous three-month training program that included field-based assessments. This increase in personnel was a feat in itself and the success of the project is a testament to the planning and team work provided by all. Land was also acquired to set up three temporary depots.

During the event, 126 incidents were safely cleared in an average of 22 minutes, due to the instant deployment of our crews who worked closely with police, fire and ambulance agencies. The team’s strong performance at keeping traffic moving seamlessly was also captured by over 170 remote CCTV cameras.

The outstanding professionalism demonstrated well past the closing ceremony has enhanced Ventia’s reputation for delivering high calibre services in challenging circumstances, and this was recognised by some of Queensland’s most senior officials, including the Minister for Transport.
