Congratulations Mel Dawson

Starting out as a scheduler with Visionstream New Zealand nine years ago, Mel has grown with the business and is one of the country’s few female project managers to work on a major infrastructure project.

Mel’s enterprising attitude has seen her proactively collaborate with co-workers, clients and the community to develop and execute a range of improvement initiatives and drive team engagement.

Mel implemented an online software tool to upskill and assess competency in safety and technical standards for employees and subcontractors. Based on its success, it has now been deployed to other Visionstream sites in New Zealand.

As part of a Have Your Say focus group, Mel was appointed to the Employee Action Group (EAG) focusing on ‘recognition and reward’. The EAG launched two initiatives to encourage peer acknowledgement of employees who demonstrate our values in action. The first involved co-leading the group to streamline and automate the local nomination process via a digital tool called ReviewR, and the second, developing and launching thank you cards and coffee cards.

To support our client Chorus, Mel introduced a mapping tool to track delivery and prove notification for Ultra-Fast Broadband build areas, ensuring local residents are informed of the latest information. In rural towns, Mel engaged non-profit organisations such as the Lions Club and Scouts to help with letterbox drops in exchange for support for their local community projects.

“Mel gives 200% to everything she does and is she is known for her solution mindset,” says Project Manager Peter Oliver. “Employees often go to her when they need advice on how to make something work better and Mel’s enterprising attitude has also been recognised by our client.”
